Illustration Sant Joan

For the summer solstice, there are the celebrations of Sant Joan. During these celebrations the unity between Catalan people from both side of the Pyrenees is renewed at the summit of the Canigou.

Usually, the Trobada del Canigó takes place the week end before Sant Joan. Southern and Northern Catalans meet on the sacred mountain and lay a bundle of firewood under the cross set at the summit.

On June 22nd, a flame that has been burning for a whole year in the Castillet in Perpignan, is carried to the summit. At midnight, it is regenerated with the bundles of wood brought from all the Catalan countries.

It is at this moment that begins the great pedestrian hand over of young mountain men to transmit the flame, which, during June 23rd night, set ablaze to thousands of fires prepared in all the villages.

In Perpignan, the arrival of the flame is awaited on June 23rd by thousands of people every year. It is a very popular and spectacular celebration you can witness: knights, classic and traditional music, audiovisual on big screen, fireworks, and to finish, a sardana around the pyres.
